Thats not the same as saying they are right to ban. The recent paper on glyphosate by the WHO is just a narrowly targeted aggregate study on non-Hodgkin lymphoma with no new research having been done. Its the equivalent of saying don’t ban drink driving because I know 10 people who were fine to drive home after drinking only bucks fizz for the night. Though the jury is still out on glyphosate (It would require an intensive multi-year and multi-site trial to be sure either way). The WHO paper offered no new data in its defense. With the notable exception of Agriland who chose a misleading title but had all the facts correctly presented in their actual article, most other news organisations haven’t really understood the difference in merit between an aggregate paper and new research.

The practice of vertically-aligned drainage channels, commonplace in Ireland, taking run-off directly into streams and rivers, seriously exacerbates flooding. Other countries insist on gently sloping drainage patterns with ponds and percolation areas which slows down the run-off, allowing river authorities time to adjust water levels. Native woodlands also help take up run-off as they act as natural sponges and their deeper, more extensive tree root systems take up more water which the trees then transpire into the atmosphere.

They do not want to import from other countries, therefore they will not help balance the worlds supplies. Removing the quotas was a bad idea…it kept everybody’s production modest and ensured a good rate of return on their product. I wish the US had a quota system to help save the greedy corporate mega farmers from themselves. In a case such as this, less would result in far more for the people who do the actual work. I don’t blame the European farmers for being upset…they will now suffer like the US does at the hands of oversupply and milk co-operatives and processors who take advantage of it.

I’d imagine the farmer was pretty disappointed that the well he was trying to dig wouldn’t work, and he certainly couldn’t have known what he would create. Of course, these days people have to have their ground evaluated in order to know what kind of water they will tap into. I’m glad no one informed him that the water under his land wouldn’t work for a water-well.

I agree that there should be precautions taken such as providing training courses for 12 years and up and that primary schools should focus on farm safety particularly if the school is in the rural parts of the country, but this idea of not allowing them to help with livestock is nonsense, the farmer is hardly going to send one of his children into calve down a mad cow or in to put raddle on the ram, on their own, he treasures his children, but the farmer will ensure that his children have a work ethic but in a safe way and he will teach his children so much in his lifetime that you could almost agree that he is better than most of the teachers available in the public sector and machinery his a whole different page, some children are suited to handling machinery but most aren’t, it all depends on the circumstances, but most of the farm accidents involving children are plain and simply just accidents it is highly unlikely that the farmer puts his children into the position intentionally that will result in a serious accident.

Comment on Research confirms lack of direct contact between dairy cows and badgers by J Brown https://www.agriland.co.uk/farming-news/research-confirms-lack-of-direct-contact-between-dairy-cows-and-badgers/#comment-41262 Sat, 25 Apr 2015 16:51:39 +0000 http://www.agriland.co.uk/?p=70566#comment-41262 Actually, humans don’t become infected with leptospirosis through ‘interaction’ with rats – it’s transmitted through infected urine. Sadly, it’s this lack of scientific understanding and the consequent hodge podge of anecdotal misinformation that perpetuates the badger/cattle issue. Considering that M. bovis is pathologically quite different from Leptospira, it’s somewhat of an irrelevant question.
With regard to the article above, I am somewhat disappointed with the caveat cited in the last paragraph. It appears that, despite the mounting information that indicates badger to cattle transmission to be difficult or virtually impossible, we are still bombarded with scientific analyses that continue to spew ‘not necessarily’, ‘it may be’, etc. I suppose it is difficult to admit that one has been barking up the wrong tree for 40 years…..

As the single farm payment is such a large part of a lot of farmers income I know of farm families who were almost hungry when the single farm payment was held up in 2013 because of the land eligibility issue.

No I don’t find it necessary to kill and eat an animal to survive. Suzanne Richardson.

Irrational claims are difficult to refute simply because they are made by irrational people. Scientific evidence abounds in supporting the safety of GM crops. The scientific community and companies commercializing the technology have failed to effectively educate the public from the outset of the development of this technology. Finally, we see executives from the inappropriately maligned Monsanto stepping to the forefront to address the issue head-on, not through arrogance or defensiveness, but through a pro-active attempt at educating the general public. Furthermore, it is interesting to note that companies such as Cibus have spent years and millions of dollars to develop alternative non-GM technology that has cleared regulatory hurdles by being designated as non-GM technology while affording crop improvements from herbicide resistance to improved functional properties. Commercially available crops will soon be available. This technology will provide crop improvements using the latest technological advances to advance the crop improvement process. There is a growing world population that will need to be fed in the years ahead and advanced scientific approaches are available to answer the need.

Our waterways are being seriously compromised by ever increasing conversions to dairying, meat is becoming just about prohibitive, pricewise for us to buy.
This is not the first purchase that this group has made, they bought 16 dairy farms back in 2010 not far from where this farm (that has been created by amalgamating many into one) they are involved with another 13 in the South Island, and now this and are quite open, now, that they intend to acquire more.
Our vineyards are about 40+% foreign owned and many of us see dairying going that way as well.
The fight is on for us NOT to become mere tenants in our own land, so to any of you thinking you might like to come and get a piece of this action, forget it, stay away, you are increasingly not welcome here!!!!!
