Two young people from Northern Ireland, aged between 18 and 24, will have an opportunity to speak at the 2024 Nuffield Farming Conference.

The three–day event takes place in Belfast between November 19 and 21 next year.

The selected duo will be part of the Nuffield Farming ‘Next-Gen’ Scholarship Programme.

A pilot scheme for the programme will run in 2024. It will be open exclusively to young people in Northern Ireland with a demonstrable interest in the dairy industry.

Nuffield

Tom Rawson, vice-chair of Nuffield Farming scholarships, attended the recent launch of the ‘Next-Gen’ programme, held at the Agri-Food and BioSciences Institute (AFBI) in Hillsborough.

He confirmed the significance of the new scholarship and its specific relevance to Northern Ireland’s dairy sector.

“Next-Gen will provide young people, aged between 18 and 24 with an opportunity to secure an in-depth knowledge of the UK’s dairy farming sector in 2024.

“It will also allow the scholarship recipients, and all the initial applicants, to find out more about Nuffield farming scholarships and the key role played by the Nuffield organisation at the very heart of the farming and food industries,” he said.

Scholarship programme

Two applicants will be selected by the Northern Ireland Nuffield Farming Association to take part in a fully funded, 30-day dairy sector study programme in the UK during the early summer of 2024.

The programme aims to give young people the opportunity to develop their understanding of the industry, while also building networks and future opportunities.

The application period for the ‘Next-Gen’ scholarship is already open, it will close on January 31, 2024.

Interviews for shortlisted applicants will take place in early February 2024, and scholarship recipients will be announced by the end of that month.

Dairy

The study tour is supported by the Nuffield Farming Dairy Group and will provide an overview of the UK dairy industry.

The scholars will participate in a dairy tour in North Wales, and visit more than ten other dairy businesses.

In addition, the scholars will be assigned a mentor and give a presentation about their experiences at the 2024 Nuffield Farming Conference, which will be held in Belfast.

Following a successful pilot programme, the Next-Gen Scholarship will be made available to young people across the UK in a variety of sectors, with up to six scholarships awarded each year.

Rupert Alers-Hankey, director designate of the Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust, said that the programme aims to develop young talent within the industry.

“It is an exciting initiative for Nuffield Farming and forms an important part of our commitment to leading positive change in agriculture.

“We hope that taking part in the programme will enable young people to establish themselves in the industry, while also getting a flavour of all that Nuffield Farming has to offer.

“Launching our pilot programme in Northern Ireland is particularly special as the Nuffield Farming Conference returns to Belfast in 2024,” he said.

The conference was launched at Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) Hillsborough in Co. Down this week.

It is envisaged that around 30 Nuffield farming scholars will present their findings at the conference with over 400 delegates in attendance.

All regions of the UK and Ireland will be represented at the 2024 event.

Nuffield conference

The conference will be held at several well-known locations throughout the city, including the Belfast Assembly Rooms, Europa Hotel, and Titanic Belfast.

Next year’s conference will have a three-day agenda featuring a welcome buffet, a formal annual dinner, and two days of scholar presentations, including presentations from the first Nuffield Farming Next-Gen scholars.

“Belfast 2024 is already set to be an exciting conference with a packed agenda, reflecting the importance of the Northern Ireland in UK agriculture and beyond,” Rupert Alers-Hankey, director designate of the Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust confirmed.

“Delegates will hear from several year groups of scholars, with study titles that reflect the length and breadth of the UK food, farming, rural and land-based industries.

“We are also looking forward to hearing from our first Nuffield Farming Next-Gen scholars who will share their experiences from their 30-day study tour of the UK dairy industry.”

Scholarships

A Nuffield Farming report has highlighted the current problems faced by the UK sheep industry due to anthelmintics over usage and has outlined sustainable steps for addressing resistance.

Carried out by Welsh farm veterinarian Miranda Timmerman, the report ‘Worming like a winner: A guide to a sustainable UK sheep flock‘, was jointly sponsored by The Worshipful Company of Farmers with Savills and The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society.

As part of her research, Timmerman travelled throughout the Netherlands, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, Zimbabwe, UK, Norway, Australia and New Zealand.

“Endoparasites have co-evolved with sheep but modern, intensive management techniques have increased their negative impact on productivity,” she said.

“Anthelmintics have been historically over-used, resulting in our current problems.

“The situation is concerning because anthelmintic resistance has the potential to stop sheep farming in the UK; however there are management changes that can be made to not only prevent anthelmintic resistance, but even reverse it.”

Sheep parasites

Nuffield said Timmerman embarked on her travels with the objective of understanding how sheep farmers could manage parasites without the use of anthelmintics, how these products could be used to prevent and reverse resistance, as well as developing practical steps farmers can take to future-proof their farms and stock.

In her report, Timmerman makes recommendations for both sheep farmers, vets and industry to address the issue of resistance.

These include the use of genetics, understanding and amending grazing practises, use of parasite monitoring technologies, and improved dissemination of relevant information to the sector.

Her study objectives included:

  1. Managing parasites without the use of anthelmintics;
  2. Developing practical steps farmers can take to future-proof their farms and stock;
  3. Using anthelmintics to prevent resistance occurring and to reverse the current incidence.

The main message of her report was that anthelmintic resistance is a direct threat to the UK sheep industry’s future survival.

Timmerman also outlined targeted selective treatment as a crucial method to slowing resistance and refugia as a key management strategy to reverse resistance.

Timmerman will present her findings at the 2023 Nuffield Farming ‘super’ conference, held at Sandy Park near Exeter from 14-16 November.

The event will feature 35 presentations by Nuffield Farming Scholars who have finished their international travel.

The scholars study a wide range of topics whilst travelling abroad, including issues related to food, farming horticultural and rural industries.

The three-day agenda includes a welcome buffet, formal annual dinner, two days of Scholar presentations and a pre-conference farm visit to nearby Wastenage Farms.

Director of the Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust, Mike Vacher, said the charity was “delighted” to have AHDB on board.

“As a regular sponsor of our awards, AHDB is a natural fit to sponsor this years’ conference and we are proud to strengthen the relationship between our organisations,” he said.

“With a record number of applicants for Nuffield Farming Scholarships this year, it is clear that there is a substantial appetite within the industry for leadership development opportunities.

“By partnering with AHDB, we are looking forward to showcasing the importance of leadership development and knowledge sharing to the industry’s future.”

Collaboration

Chair of AHDB, Nicholas Saphir, said the board was delighted to sponsor this year’s Nuffield conference.

“It’s a statement of collaboration between two important organisations committed to a common goal of farming excellence and an economic and sustainable future for the farming and land management industry,” he said.

By sharing their findings and experiences, scholars bring fresh insight and ideas that inspire change and drive the industry forward.

Mike Vacher, director of the Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust, explained the important role that Nuffield scholars play, especially during times of change.

“Nuffield Farming Scholarships provide a unique opportunity within the food and farming industry.

Not only do scholars undertake an in-depth, global study about a chosen topic, but they are also in a unique position of influence to share these findings with the wider agricultural community and show the way forward.

“This opportunity provides the foundation for scholars to both succeed in their own business as well as impact the wider industry.”

NuffieldLongley Farm estate manager Chris Harrap has published his Nuffield Farming report titled “We shape our buildings, thereafter they shape us” – an environmental psychology study of livestock buildings and how design affects humans, animals and the human-animal relationship.

“For farming to be sustainable long-term, our buildings will need to be good spaces for people, animals and socially acceptable to our fellow citizens,” explained Chris.

We should ensure our farms are well equipped to cater for the evolving circumstances in society and ensure they are focused on achieving the triple bottom line: People, Planet, Profit.”

Chris explored how the design of modern livestock buildings has changed and the impact this has on the well-being of farmers, their animals and the relationship between the two.

He explored how biophilic design principles could play a role in the design of agricultural buildings in the future.

“Where permanent housing is required, farming can learn from other construction sectors, who are finding ways to build much more visually attractive structures, which are positive spaces for people, using sustainable materials,” said Chris.

Looking towards natural shelter

For those turning to a lower input, more agroecological way of farming, Chris suggests looking to more natural shelter.

“Where possible, livestock should be reared with abundant, well-planned natural shelter such as trees and hedges.

This requires long-term planning, but plenty of grant funding is available and these features can also generate other incomes in the future.

“If additional man-made shelter is needed, portable structures are the next best option, providing shelter for animals as they are moved around land,” he added.

“Whatever we choose to build, for farming to be sustainable long-term, our buildings will need to be good spaces for people, animals and socially acceptable to our fellow citizens.

They also need to tread more gently on our environment, in the construction process itself and once operational.

“With engagement with other architecture and construction sectors, we can learn from those already leading the way and change our farms for the better,” he concluded.

The Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust (NFST) has been awarded a grant from the Garfield Weston Foundation to fund a programme offering business and mental resilience support to the UK farming community.

The programme will be delivered in partnership with the Farming Community Network (FCN) and Focussed Farmers and will include a video series, mentorship programme, farm walk series, online webinar, newsletter, peer support networks and online workshops.

This project sets out to provide support across the sector to those members of the farming community affected most by the hardships and isolation brought by this year’s challenges.

“We are delighted that the Garfield Weston Foundation has chosen to provide funding for this important project,” said Mike Vacher, Director of NFST.

This year has been full of agricultural challenges like drought and flooding, as well as further stress and isolation caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

“Our hope is that by using the Nuffield Farming name, we will be able to reach those who would otherwise not approach other organisations due to the stigma around mental health.”

The programme is due to begin in November 2020 and will continue until summer 2021. Webinar and event information will be published on the Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust website and Nuffield Farming’s Eventbrite page.

What will the programme include?

The Farming Community Network will produce a series of videos to help the farming community plan ahead for the future during this period of immense change.

These will consist of a mix of in-depth interviews and shorter clips with farmers discussing topical subjects such as planning for Brexit, succession and diversification.

“A lack of medium and long-term planning, and stresses caused by this, are common themes in many calls presenting to FCN’s Helpline every year,” said Jude McCann, FCN CEO and Nuffield Scholar.

With 2020 causing great disruption for many, and post-Brexit rural policy likely to affect our industry in significant ways for years to come, FCN is playing a key role in helping to support the farming community in preparing for the future and planning ahead.

“We are delighted to be working with the Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust and Focussed Farmers in delivering this important partnership and supporting farmers’ business and mental resilience,” she concluded.

Vet government lockdownVets Claire Whittle and Rob Howe have been awarded 2021 Nuffield scholarships to support their research into regenerative agriculture and how it can work in conjunction with supporting livestock health and farm productivity.

Both Claire and Rob are based at LLM Farm Vets in Cheshire and Lancashire, which is part of the VetPartners group.

While they have already been working with their farm clients to explore how sustainable farming methods relate to livestock health, for example as part of a fully integrated parasite control strategy, the scholarship opportunities will increase the vets’ ability to provide further qualitative guidance to pass on farmers.

Claire’s research will ask whether regenerative agriculture principles improve the health and welfare of livestock, and if so, to what extent.

“I’m thrilled to be awarded the scholarship, as it gives scope to build on the work we’re already doing at LLM to join the dots between improving soil health and biodiversity, and the impacts on farm animal health,” she said.

Rob, who will be exploring and defining the role of the farm vet within regenerative agriculture, said:

It’s a really exciting time to have been awarded this opportunity, as globally there’s growing interest in how farming can have a positive impact on the health of people, livestock, wildlife, biodiversity and climate change.

Use of the dung beetle

The scholarship will enable and extend a specific area of his research which has been focussed on vets making use of the humble dung beetle to open the door to mindset shifts on how to approach parasite control and harness the power of on-farm ecology.

Dung beetles generate £367 million of value each year to UK cattle farms, which is often unrecognised.

“The role of farm vets has been very dynamic over the past couple of decades, shifting steadily to prevention,” Rob said.

We’re now entering into an era where sustainability and environmental considerations, which directly influence animal health, must become central to our day to day.

“With ELMs approaching, this will only become more important for us and our clients. I’m very much looking forward to exploring this field further and using the findings to develop the services offered in our practices and the wider industry.”

Image source: Nuffield TrustApplications have opened for one of the UK’s most prestigious agricultural scholarship programmes.

Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust (NFST) is pleased to announce that applications for 2021 scholarships are now open on the trust’s website and will close on July 31, 2020.

Around 20 scholarships are awarded each year, providing successful Nuffield Scholars a substantial bursary toward the travel and research of a topic of interest in farming, food, horticulture or rural industries.

Additional funding also goes towards the attendance of the Contemporary Scholar’s Conference, the pre-study briefing and other events.

Nuffield Farming Scholars come from across farming, land-based, food or agriculturally-associated industries.

Findings from scholars’ studies have brought relevant and meaningful impact to UK farming that continue to resonate long after a study is completed.

The money awarded to a Nuffield Scholar for their study is not just a scholarship, it’s an investment in UK agriculture and in the personal development of the scholar themselves.

Adam Banks, a 2018 Nuffield Scholar and founder of insect farming business Instar Farming, credits his Nuffield Farming Scholarship with helping him grow his business and his profile in the industry.

“My Nuffield Scholarship gave me the opportunity to travel around the world building relationships with people who I probably would never have had the opportunity to meet otherwise,” he said.

Trying to launch a business in an emerging and niche industry like insect farming can feel daunting at times, however, Nuffield introduced me to a global community of entrepreneurs all working towards similar goals.

“Since completing my scholarship, I have gone on to develop my business and speak at a range of events, from a local farmer buying group to an international conference at the Natural History Museum.”

Mike Vacher, director of the Nuffield Farming Scholarship Trust, added that what scholars learn as part of their study and travels is important not only to the individuals themselves, but UK food and farming industry.

“Food and farming industries in the UK are looking at major changes in the coming years. Nuffield Farming Scholars are ideally suited to contribute their leadership skills and specialist knowledge as our nation looks to improve its food supply and agricultural practice,” he said.

“The Nuffield Farming legacy is evident with multiple generations of scholars leading across all sectors of our industry.

We are also very proudly celebrating 2020 as the ‘Year of the 1000th Scholar’ – an important milestone in our history.

“Every year, applicants impress us with their innovative ideas and passion for their proposed topics of inquiry. We welcome all driven individuals from across the food, agriculture, horticulture and rural industries to apply and encourage those interested to reach out to our main office for support.”

How to apply

Those interested in applying for a Nuffield Scholarship are encouraged to begin the process well ahead of the July 31 deadline.

The Nuffield Farming office is able to connect applicants with existing Nuffield Scholars who can provide support and advice about the application process.

Eligibility requirements

  • Applicants must work within the farming, food, horticulture, rural and associated industries or are in a position to influence these industries;
  • Applicants must be aged between 22 and 45 years (the upper age limit is 45 on July 31 the year of application);
  • There is no requirement for academic qualifications, but applicants will already be well-established in their career and demonstrate a passion for the industry they work in. They must also be three years post-tertiary education;
  • Candidates must be resident in the UK and hold a UK passport or be working directly for UK agriculture.

Queen's Birthday HonoursTwo Nuffield Farming Scholars have received awards as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for 2019.

Barbara Bray, a Nuffield scholar in 2017, received an MBE for services to food and nutrition, while John Martin, a scholar in 2011, received a BME for services to agriculture in Northern Ireland for his dedication to the development of young farmers.

Bray is currently director of the Oxford Farming Conference. and sits on committees for both the Institute of Food Science and Technology, and The Nutrition Society’s Training Academy.

She studied vegetable production for “specific nutritional needs” as part of her scholarship.

Bray regularly speaks at food and agriculture events and, most recently, contributed to debates at the UN Committee for Food Security in Rome, on issues including youth and women in agriculture.

“For anyone with a passion for food and farming, the ability to work with a range of people, sharing knowledge and ideas, is such an important skill,” she said.

“I have found the agri-food sector a great space to work in as a black British scientist and to lead real positive change. I’m delighted to receive this award,” Bray added.

John Martin

Meanwhile, Martin also has an impressive track record, serving as vice-president of the European Council of Young Farmers (CEJA) from 1999 to 2003.

His involvement with CEJA was what led him to pursue a Nuffield scholarship, looking at issues around farm succession and knowledge transfer within family farms.

He has been heavily involved in the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society over the last 30 years, currently serving as chair of the Finance Committee.

“I have always been passionate about the future of young people in farming and Northern Ireland agriculture, and to be recognised in this way is such an honour. I look forward to continuing to serve this industry for many years to come,” Martin said.

Barbara Bray, a 2017 Nuffield Scholar and food safety consultant, credits her Nuffield Scholarship with helping her to branch out and realise new opportunities for her business.

“I was so excited to be awarded a scholarship. It took me years to decide to apply, thinking that it wasn’t for people in the food supply chain and that I couldn’t afford the time,” she said.

I benefitted hugely from taking time out of my business to focus on my research, building relationships with new people, often from different industries and countries.

“My Nuffield Farming Scholarship was an amazing opportunity for me to see the importance of food and nutrition policy, which has led to me speaking at a Committee for Food Security event at the UN and at a global food security conference at Queens University, Belfast.”

Mike Vacher, director of the Nuffield Farming Scholarship Trust said: “The agriculture, horticulture, food and rural industries are vibrant, ever-changing and rife with opportunity.

“Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust aims to find the best and brightest from across those sectors and provide them with tools and connections that allow them to take their own careers and businesses to the next level.

“The knowledge and perspective that scholars bring back from their studies have the potential to change the industry and help it navigate the inevitable challenges we face in the future.”

Nuffield Farming ScholarshipThe Nuffield Farming Scholarship Trust has announced the names of its 19 2019 Nuffield Scholars, who are to commence their studies and travels in next year.

The scholars, who come from across UK agriculture, food and rural industries, will have the opportunity to travel for at least eight weeks in order to investigate their topic fully and explore global practices.

‘Positive change’

“UK agriculture is entering a period of unprecedented change, environmentally, socially and politically,” said Mike Vacher, Nuffield director.

“Our 2019 scholars were selected from a strong set of applicants for their ability to lead positive change in farming, food, horticulture and other rural sectors, as well as their potential to inspire others during their scholarships and beyond.

“Their scholarships will allow scholars to devote time to their particular subject while drawing on the Nuffield network which will put them in touch with world-class experts in their chosen subjects. This is only possible due to bursary funding from the Nuffield Farming Scholarship Trust’s generous sponsors.”

The scholarships will be formally awarded at the Nuffield Farming Conference in Glasgow in late November, after which the scholars will commence their 18-month long studies.

“We have a diverse range of study topics this year and, on behalf of the Trust, I’d like to wish the 2019 scholars the very best of luck. I know that they have the ability to help British agriculture develop and thrive in a new challenging chapter,” added Vacher.

Hunter Kane, NuffieldWhile dozens of tractors and machinery might come and go every month from Co. Antrim agricultural machinery dealer Hunter Kane’s yard, there’s one tractor the family will never sell.

Taking centre-stage among hundreds of thousands of pounds’ worth of the latest agri kit, sits an unassuming star attraction – the very first new tractor ever sold by the firm’s founder Hunter Kane.

The family business, which is now in its third generation, began around 55 years ago when farmer Hunter Kane decided to sell his diggers.

Beginnings

Hunter put a few ads in the local paper and the rest was history – realising he had a talent for sales and an interest in farm machinery, he started the business on his own at around 21 years of age.

Hunter said: “I kept bits and pieces in the yard and local farmers came and bought from me and it has just grown from there.

“At one point I had a picture of 50 second-hand combines all in this yard.”

One of Hunter’s fondest memories of dealing was successfully bidding for 50 Nuffield tractors and a job lot of parts when the factory closed.

The tractors were popular locally and allowed him to continue to grow the business. In buying the parts it also meant he was able to support his customers with their purchases.

However, the real secret to the business’ success, Hunter explained, was keeping an eye on new technology, keeping his word and giving his customers good support.

“There is no point dealing in lies,” he said. “It will get you nowhere.”

Eventually Kane’s reputation preceded him to the point where he could make bids on machinery in England without even viewing it – an impressive feat in a pre-internet age.

An example of some of the tractors you’re more likely to see these days in the yard

Today the business is booming, employing 14 people and acting as an official dealer for several major machinery brands.

Son Uel takes the reins and grandson Joshua – who is around the same age his grandfather was when he founded the business – also helps out.

Meanwhile, the farming side of the business is now run by Hunter’s other son, Charles.

Over the years, the family has been a dealer for Nuffield, British Leyland and New Holland – among others.

The first Nuffield, which was the first new tractor sold by Hunter well over 50 years ago, was traded in for a bigger replacement and kept by the Kane family ever since.

It was first bought by Robert Lyttle from Kells whose family is still counted among the firm’s customers.

At one point the team of staff decided to restore the vintage gem to its former glory.

Several hundred people visited the two open nights in Ballycastle.

Uel later added a 26-year-old Pottinger wagon. Prior to Uel buying the machine it had been actively used on farms for 35 years. Today it sits side-by-side with one of the latest wagons on the market.
